The persistence of desire

Can you sell me earth, the deep night of the roots; dinosaur teeth and the scattered lime of distant skeletons?

Can you sell me jungles already buried, dead birds, stone fish, sulphur from volcanoes, a billion years spiralling upwards?

Can you sell me land, can you sell me land, can you?

Nicolás Guillen (Cuba)

Can the poetic conjunction of signifying symbolic elements in words, in images, in tangible forms, also be a reflection on the inevitable circumstance of the planet, of the species, of humanity?

Can art contribute to this urgent discussion?

Since the beginning of my artistic production, concern for the natural environment, ecology, the extinction of species, climate change and environmental awareness have been recurring themes and the presence of animals as symbolic elements has been a constant.

I don't know if art can in any way change consciousness and drive concrete actions for the improvement of planetary conditions, but like a mantra the obsessive recurrence of these interests is relentless, persistent, obsessive.

And ultimately a poetic action.

The piece, a sculptural ensemble of pieces made with the 3D printing technique, introduces a line of work that, with a new approach, takes up elements from my previous series. An invitation to a world in which unexpected and poetic encounters immerse us in a singular and reflective universe.

"beautiful as the fortuitous encounter, on a dissecting table, of a sewing machine and an umbrella".

Isidore Lucien Ducasse

Count de Lautréamont's statement is configured as one of the distinctive fundamentals of surrealism, the conjunction of unconnected, dislocated or even contradictory realities.

The works of the series The Persistence of Desire adopt from surrealism a principle of conjugation of apparently capricious images, however, the surrealist automatism in which irrationality and the appeal to the subconscious are essential, is intervened by the conjugation of images that have an intentional symbolic meaning.

The apparently dissimilar encounter of animal representations and architectural elements is an allegory of the social, economic, political, ecological and sexual circumstances of the contemporary world.

The unexpected appearances of animal species in the desolate urban environments in times of pandemic revealed to us an unsuspected force of restoration and insubmission of the animal kingdom that questions human preeminence and poses the fragility of the species in frank opposition to its manifest anthropocentric arrogance.

Through images of animals and architectures placed in a situation of encounter, confrontation and interaction, poetic devices are constructed with a strong visual charge and a disturbing, questioning undertone.

The works executed by means of 3D printing from freely available files reveal a particular paradigm of contemporary production.

The appropriation of digital material and its resignification to build unsuspected, playful and dreamlike encounters.

The work is the synthesis of many previous aesthetic interests in the development of the work.

In fact, it comes directly from the works La persistencia del deseo (The persistence of desire) which gives its name to the whole series and Expiación y castigo (Atonement and punishment), in which animals and architectures are already confronted with each other, creating stories with concrete references to contemporary history.
